The movie starts when Lightfoot a young man steals a car, and unawares, an assassin John “Thunderbolt” Doherty is preparing to kill a minister at his rostrum. Lightfoot unawares rescues Thunderbolt on his escapes by foot.
It emerges that Thunderbolt is a bank robber who had been hiding under the imitation of a clerk. The money from the robbery has never been found, but Thunderbolt knows where it was hidden.
Thunderbolt´s previous partners assume that he stole it. After checking Thunderbolt and Lightfoot discover that the old schoolhouse in which the money had been hidden had been replaced by a modern structure, and they think the cash was destroyed by accident.

‘Michael Cimino’ was given the chance to write and direct this picture for Clint Eastwood after Eastwood was impressed with a rewrite Cimino did on the second “Dirty Harry” script, Magnum Force (1973).

When ‘Michael Cimino’ was discussing the film with ‘Jeff Bridges’, he told Bridges it was his job to make Clint Eastwood laugh both on and off camera and he did.
