The film starts when LaHood’s ruffians riding into the pannier’s camp, shooting things up and pulling down tents and cabins. Soon after, one of the panniers heads into town for supplies, and is attacked by the same ruffians.
A drifter rides in and defends the miner with unexpected skill wielding a hickory axe handle. Upon returning to the placers camp, the drifter compounds this surprise by revealing a minister’s collar when invited to dinner.
A classic western story line develops, leading to a final showdown in town between the deputies, Stock burn and Preacher.

- Warren Clarke has said in an interview with TV Times that he was offered a role in this project.
- The first horse assigned to Richard Kiel collapsed the first time he climbed aboard. He was then assigned a stronger horse.
- Preacher uses a Remington 1858 revolver, a percussion revolver with a top strap that allowed the entire cylinder to be removed, permitting the user to carry multiple loaded cylinders. This enabled the shooter to reload much more quickly than Colt percussion revolvers of the same time period. However, it is highly unsafe to carry a capped and loaded cylinder — it will fire even outside of a gun as soon as a cap is struck. In the movie, we don’t get so see Preacher installing any caps after the famous cylinder change.
- The train station built for production was used again late in 1988 for Back to the Future Part III (1990).
- During shooting, Clint Eastwood sustained what he describes as the worst injury he has ever had on set when a horse he was riding fell through thin ice and launched him forward. Clint suffered a dislocated shoulder.
